North Reading Basketball Supports Coaches Vs. Cancer

The North Reading High School boys basketball team will support Coaches vs. Cancer when they play Newburyport on Feb. 1. Fans are asked to wear gray or pink in support of finding a cure for brain and breast cancer. 

Gray and pink ribbons will be on sale at the game for $1 each. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and half-time half-court contest. All of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

NRHS basketball coaches are working with other Massachusetts coaches to raise donations to support American Cancer Society research and programs. 

This is not the first time the basketball team has shown support for finding a cure for cancer. The team wore orange when they played Rockport earlier this month to support classmate Max Carlson and his family. Carlson lost his father Kurt this month to brain cancer. 

"The color represents Kurt's Krusader's a group of friends, family, and community members who rallied behind Kurt and the entire Carlson family during his courageous battle with brain cancer," said parent Donna Wade. "The team wore Kurt's Krusaders shirts for the pre-game warm ups and orange socks for the duration of the game."

Parent and North Reading teacher Heidi Hogan added, "The boys have been wearing orange socks at each home game as a tribute to Kurt Carlson, who recently passed from brain cancer. Orange is the color of "Kurt's Krusaders," a group of supporters from the Relay for Life and the Brain Tumor Walk in Boston. His son, Max, is a senior at NRHS. The boys are good friends of his, and wearing orange socks is a small way to show their support for Max and his family. Coaches vs. Cancer is another way for the boys, along with their families and all of the fans, to show their support for brain cancer, breast cancer, and the American Cancer Society. We are hoping for a large crowd to show up to support Coaches vs. Cancer, and the NRHS boys basketball team wearing pink and/or gray."

Show your support for the NRHS basketball teams, their winning streak and finding a cure for brain and breast cancer by donating and attending the Feb. 1 home game. The JV game starts at 5:30 and the varsity game is at 7 p.m.
