Our Feathered Friends Need Your Summer Savvy

Written by Lanning Taliaferro

Heat waves like this one call for special attention from backyard birders.

Even if all you have is a hummingbird feeder, check out this advice that Feed the Birds offered up on Facebook:
With the weather being what it is...

  • Freshen up your bird baths daily.
  • Clean and refill your hummingbird feeders every 3-4 days.
  • Monitor your seed feeders. Make sure the seed isn't turning moldy or clumping. Give them a good shake to see if everything is separated and flowing smoothly through the ports/openings. Pay close attention to the bottom ports of your tube feeders.
  • Switch from suet cakes to dough and seed cakes. (i.e.: our most popular cakes are the hot pepper cakes, which are a dough.) If you prefer suet cakes, you can refrigerate them until ready to be used.
It's summer in New England. Enjoy your backyards, all the while promoting happy and healthy bird feeding!
