Rocket Update Week 10: Comeback Falls Just Short

By Drew Johnson ('15)

Reading played a tremendous second half against Waltham High School on Friday, but this week it wasn’t quite enough as the Rockets fell short 28-22 and were eliminated from the state playoffs.

“We were real happy with the way the second half went; we scored 22 unanswered points,” Coach John Fiore told me on Tuesday. “The problem was we weren’t able to answer early enough or often enough.” Waltham was able to put up 28 unanswered points against the Rockets, who would then respond with 22 unanswered points of their own. “Hats off to Waltham, they’re a very good football team,” said the coach. “We just didn’t make enough plays and they did.”

But the Rockets aren’t finished yet. “In order for every team to get their full schedule of games, you end up with a conciliation game,” explained Coach Fiore, who has expressed his liking of this new playoff format in the past. “It’s good that it’s not a win-or-go-home type of situation, but we do need to bounce back quickly against Haverhill.”

The Rockets are set to take on Haverhill of the Merrimack Valley Conference this Friday night at Trinity Stadium in Haverhill.
