Reading Boys Basketball Upset Bid Falls Just Short

The Rockets were eliminated from the postseason on Tuesday night with a 60-57 road loss to New Mission.

The Reading High School boys basketball team's stay in the North Division 2 postseason was a short one. But for the Rockets, it was mission accomplished in proving they belonged in the bracket. New Mission, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, snuck past No. 9 Reading by a 60-57 margin in the teams' preliminary round. Following the loss, the Rockets' campaign came to a close with a record of 12-7. The team graduates five seniors from this year's squad. Are you a big fan of the Rockets? You'll also want to see:

Congratulations to the Rockets. Although the score does not indicate a victory, our Rockets were victorious. They took a team that is favored to win the D-2 title to the final shot of the game. They never gave up and left all they had on the floor. Truly an inspiration to the community of Reading. Thanks Fellas! Leo DeSimone   more ›

Lynnfield Ends Hornets' Season Early

Pioneers defeat North Reading boys' basketball team, end dreams of postseason play.

The stage was set for the North Reading High School boys' basketball team to get its ninth win of the season and keep its hopes of a postseason berth alive, but the Lynnfield Pioneers had other plans when they came into the Hornets' gym on Thursday night, handing their opponent an upset 60-56 loss. The Pioneers (7-11) already knew they lost their chance for a spot in the MIAA state tournament, making the game against North Reading a last hurrah for the 2010-11 squad. Lynnfield went out with a bang, locking in a two-game winning streak to close out the season, including the upset victory during North Reading's senior recognition night, and thwarting the Hornets' hopes of tournament play in the process. The Hornets (8-11) did not go out with…

VIDEO: Hornets Hang With Generals, Fall Late

North Reading boys basketball team loses to an experienced Hamilton-Wenham squad, 60-51, on Tuesday night. Hornets need to win remaining two games to qualify for the postseason.

Both teams brought their game for Tuesday's Cape Ann League boys basketball match-up of the Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School Generals and the North Reading High School Hornets. The reigning CAL (Division 2) champion Generals clinched another league title by beating the Hornets, 60-51, at North Reading High School. But there was a big hole in the Generals' lineup without senior Pat Hendrickson, whose season ended Monday night with a torn ACL.  Hendrickson suffered a knee injury during Monday's overtime win over Masconomet, and will have an MRI on Thursday to determine the extent of the damage, but the player said his doctor is "85 percent sure" the ACL was torn. Meanwhile, the Hornets were looking to erase the memory of a 70-43 drubbing…

Hornets Hoop Squads Look to Head in Same Direction at Midway Point

Both the boys and girls' basketball teams will face Cape Ann Large Division teams for the first time in the 2010-2011 season starting this week.

Tournament time is quickly approaching for Massachusetts high school basketball teams, and this includes the North Reading Hornets. However, from recent results and upcoming match-ups, it appears that the boys in green and gold will have a much different path than the girls when it comes to what will happen in March. Boys The 2010-2011 North Reading boys’ basketball season has been a mixed bag so far, and one could say that the last week was a microcosm of that inconsistency, with a strong win against Amesbury at home and a difficult loss to Georgetown on the road. There’s no denying that this North Reading squad has talent, but time is running out on whether the Hornets can consistently bring that talent to bear and earn a playoff spot …
