Retirement Means Staying Active for Walter Fitzmaurice

This decorated 87-year-old World War II Army Air Corps veteran continues to give back to God, country and family.

Walter Fitzmaurice could well be sitting home in an easy chair in front of the TV, happily clicking through channels on the remote, leaving today's community work and worry to those much younger.  At 87, he quite deservedly could spend his time fully retired. Instead, this North Reading resident for nearly 60 years spends many mornings, afternoons and even evenings -- either alone or as a team member -- serving his North Reading neighbors. Fitzmaurice, a native of Rumford, Maine, is a member of what has been dubbed "The Greatest Generation" by broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw in his 1998 book of the same title. In the book, Brokaw argues that this generation, which grew up during the Great Depression, fought not for fame and recognition, …

Diverse Talents Help Linda Mazzola Find Personal Satisfaction

Talented resident can be found teaching religious education, volunteering at the church, and teaching knitting.

On any given day, you might find Linda Mazzola enthusiastically preparing for first-grade religious education classes at St. Theresa Parish, observe her on the road en route to a local high school event, or catch her at home attentively stitching her latest T-shirt quilt. This self-described energetic, devoted and spirited woman has lived in North Reading since early childhood. A 1982 graduate of North Reading High School, Mazzola continued on to receive a degree in psychology from Boston University. Along with husband Bob, she has been zealously raising three active children:  a daughter presently attending college at Stonehill in Easton, and a son and younger daughter, who are North Reading High School senior and sophomore students, …
