How Charitable is Reading and North Reading?

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has released detailed information on philanthropy by state, county, town and zip code.

The percentage of their income Reading and North Reading residents give to charity is less than the state and country averages, according to a study released this week. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's "How America Gives" study reported that Reading residents, with a median discretionary income of $70,083, gave a median contribution of $1,767, of their income to charity in 2008, the tax year for which data was collected. North Reading residents, with a median discretionary income of $68,364, gave a median contribution of $1,616, of their income to charity in 2008. By way of comparison, the state, and country's median contribution was 2.8 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively. (See chart below.) Total Contributions  The study is based on …

Reading Residents Running for Cancer Research

Running in the Boston Marathon to raise money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The following is a press release from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute On April 16, Judy Cianciolo, Glenn Fiore, and Scott Magoon, all of Reading, will be running in the 116th Boston Marathon to help conquer cancer as members of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. These Reading residents, along with Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the United States and around the world, will run Massachusetts’ historic marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston with a goal to raise $4.8 million for cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Reading Resident Honored by the Jimmy Fund

Gabriella Graceffa-Bunker, of Reading, helped organize the Whole Foods Market 4th Annual Charitable Golf Classic at Andover Country Club.

The following is a press release issued by the Jimmy Fund BOSTON - More than 150 volunteer run tournaments were recognized by the Jimmy Fund on Feb. 16, at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, for their commitment to the Jimmy Fund Golf Program.  By organizing golf tournaments, they helped raise nearly $6.5 million in 2011 for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through Jimmy Fund Golf, one of the nation’s oldest and largest charity golf programs. VIDEO: Walking for a Cure

Five years after a family tragedy, a husband and daughter help raise more than $10,000 for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

Five years ago, Andy Graham's wife Jessica lost her eight-month battle with leukemia. Doctors diagnosed the mother of one after undergoing a mandatory physical for her application to nursing school.  Today, Andy and Jessica's adopted daughter, Tracy (now 14), are raising money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Over the last five years, the pair have raised money under a team called, "Jessica's Friends."  This year, the team has raised more than $10,000, the largest amount raised by any team in North Reading.  As a special tribute this year, Tracy Graham will sing Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" with her friend Emma, who also came to the town from the same Chinese orphanage.
