Chuck Hogan, author of “Prince of Thieves,” which was turned into the movie “The Town” spoke at the North Reading library Tuesday night.
Being an author is hard work and is often filled with at least initial disappointment. Author Chuck Hogan’s hard work paid off with not only a best-selling book “Prince of Thieves,” but a popular film “The Town” starring Ben Affleck. Born in Hyde Park and raised on the South Shore, Hogan was not brought up in an artistic family, but was drawn to storytelling. “I remember going to movies, reading books. I felt I was getting more out of it and getting into it more than my friends were,” he told the audience at the Friends of the Flint Memorial Library event. He looked well past his surroundings for his first books, including an unpublished 800-page novel called “Small Town Murders.” “That’s all you really need to know about that,” Hogan …

Greta Barresi has many stories to share about her travel throughout the world and China.
Resident Greta Barresi is a world traveler. She's been to every continent in the world. Last Thursday evening, Barresi returned from a two-week long trip to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. It wasn't her first time there, but she said it's probably her last. Why? Because at 80 years of age, Barresi thinks it's time to settle down for a bit. But, this doesn't mean she doesn't have exciting stories to share. On the contrary, she enjoys educating others about the places she's been able to see. "If people are interested in learning about these things, than I am happy to help them with anything I know," Barresi said. This Thursday, at Flint Memorial Library, Barresi will be sharing her experiences of a trip she took to China last …

The library provides literary escapes in the morning and evening.
If your best great escape is into a book, you are in luck. The Flint Memorial Library offers an opportunity to join with like-minded literature hounds. Ten years ago locals started gathering once a month at the library to converse about current reads and this tradition still holds true today. Roughly 15 members meet and each month one member picks the book and prepares questions. Book lovers who are in town during the day can join the discussion on the last Wednesday of every month at 10:00 a.m. Those who work during the day can attend the evening discussion the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. This month, the daytime title is War Dances by Sherman Alexie: a collection of short stories and poems that won the PEN/Faulkner Award …

I am looking forward to this event. Like Lindsay, I have family living in China. My brother, Patrick, is in Chengdu (South Central China). He has been there for about 5 years now initially teaching English but he is now an examiner. He has been all over China and writes brilliantly about his travels at http://slow-boat.blogspot.com/. He likes living in China but his views can be a little cynical …   more ›
