North Reading Girl Scout Holds Interfaith Leadership Summit

Jenna Crawford held the summit at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reading.

North Reading High School student Jenna Crawford has been a girl scout since 2007. This year, she is working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award and in the quest to receive the award, she held an Interfaith Leadership Summit at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Reading. "The Interfaith Leadership Summit was a conference in which high school students from across the area came together in this leadership initiative centered on diversity, acceptance and tolerance, religious pluralism, and identities," Crawford said. About 50 students attended the summit in late October where the goal was to "highlight different dimensions of diversity, and how we can ultimately find a certain unity in our diversity." NRHS Senior Plants Produce for Food Pantry

Samantha McGoldrick installed four raised beds at Town Hall to grow vegetables for the North Reading Food Pantry.

North Reading High School Senior Samantha McGoldrick has been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten. To receive the highest award a scout can dream of and help her community, McGoldrick planted raised beds at Town Hall to benefit the Food Pantry. McGoldrick wanted her Girl Scout Gold project to center around food and help those in need. After taking a trip to the Food Pantry, she realized how little fresh produce they had. During her visit, she remembers seeing about four watermelons and that was it. “It’s not nearly enough produce that they have,” she said. So she got to work on the beds, and built four in the back of Town Hall. She planned to have two beds of tomatoes, one bed of lettuce and one of squash. Unfortunately, she planted…

North Reading Girl Scout Builds Free Gardens

Kristen Shevlin has been building free gardens for residents for her Girl Scout Gold Project.

Kristen Shevlin, upcoming North Reading High School senior, has been building back yard vegetable gardens for residents as part of her Girl Scout Gold project. She is doing this free of charge, and plans to continue next year. Shevlin has been involved with Girl Scouts since she was in kindergarten. Receiving the Gold award, the highest honor for a Girl Scout, would be a great way to "end her Girl Scout career," she said. She chose building backyard gardens for her project because she wanted to "do something to give back to our town a little bit.” The raised gardens contain vegetable plants including tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and peppers. Local Student Leaves Mark on Reading

Laura White is trying to leave her mark on Reading with her Girl Scout Gold Project and Shakespeare.

Laura White, an upcoming senior at Reading Memorial High School, is working on her Girl Scout Gold Project, which aims to increase the exposure and appreciation of Shakespeare’s works in the Reading community.  She has been involved in Girl Scouts and theatre for 11 years, and decided to combine her love for both by completing the project.  "The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes a Girl Scout’s leadership skills, creativity and commitment to making a lasting impact on her community, world and the future and is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve," she said. White must complete a minimum of 80 hours of work, which has to be sustainable years in the future, she "should be able to return to Reading and still see an impact on the …
