Great American Tavern Makes Changes to Please Local Residents

Great American Tavern addresses noise, parking, and lighting issues.

Great American Tavern will address local residents complaints by installing a shoebox light, fence, heavier curtain for their stage, and signs reminding patrons to respect the neighbors. After listening to resident complaints at a Board of Selectman meeting on May 17, the tavern decided to implement some changes. At last Tuesday's Community Planning Commission (CPC) meeting, board members discussed the proposed remedies for the establishment. In addition to the tavern's patrons making excessive noise, residents complained about parking issues and bright lights shining into nearby houses. The tavern's owner Robert Palmer is amenable to all of the solutions that were mentioned during the CPC meeting, board member Warren Pearce said. To …

New restaurant at 303 Main St. hosted a private party Sunday night. Patch stopped by to take a tour of the place, which has a weekend of live music planned to celebrate.

North Reading's newest restaurant officially opened its doors Tuesday. The Great American Tavern, located at the former Ristorante Daniela site at 303 Main St., held a private party Sunday night to kick off its opening week. The restaurant, managed by the owners of the Tanner Tavern in Woburn, has seating for more than 200 people and also will hold live music and other events. The restaurant has a trio of bands lined up to celebrate its opening. On Thursday, RainDog will take the stage, followed on Friday by Pulse and Saturday by Onset. The bands will play from 9 p.m. to midnight, with last call at 12:30 a.m. Last call every other night will be 11:30 p.m., according to the restaurant. They would do well to add some acoustic treatments to the ceiling. The place is incredibly loud, even when it's not that full of people. It has the acoustic feel of a gymnasium--loud and reverberant. The food is decent but the ambiance leaves something to be desired due to the noise.   more ›

Why Was 303 Main St. Built So Close to Route 28?

Officials say the economy, septic limitations and smart growth affected the design.

The look of the building at the former Daniela’s site at 303 Main St. is unusual. Why was a building of this type constructed so close to the street? The economy, septic limitations and new smart growth combined to influence the aesthetics of The Village Shoppes of North Reading, the new development on the former Ristorante Daniela site at 303 Main St. The new 15,000-square foot building is set close to Main Street, with the parking at the rear. The building is set forward for two reasons, said Heidi Griffin, North Reading’s community planning administrator. Hot water tank needed repairs (Hot water provided by one boiler) after 3 years use. Massive damming due to some idiot architect who laid the gutters out wrong.
