Both the boys and girls' basketball teams will face Cape Ann Large Division teams for the first time in the 2010-2011 season starting this week.
Tournament time is quickly approaching for Massachusetts high school basketball teams, and this includes the North Reading Hornets. However, from recent results and upcoming match-ups, it appears that the boys in green and gold will have a much different path than the girls when it comes to what will happen in March. Fast-paced Minuteman Mustangs no match for North Reading in a 63-35 victory in the Cougar Classic at Austin Prep.
Depending on which coach you talked to, it was a game that was either terrible or not good enough. But either way, the first game of the 2010 Austin Prep Cougar Classic ended in a resounding victory for North Reading with a 63-35 win over Minuteman Tech of Lexington on Wednesday night. Although the Mustangs were able to narrow the gap somewhat in the second quarter, for Minuteman coach John Fusco, there wasn't much good he could see that came out of a contest that was not really in doubt at any point. Manchester-Essex guard Joe Mussachia equals North Reading's total output at the free-throw line as part of 30-point night.
The North Reading Hornets' weren't able to celebrate their first home game of the year as they fell 58-51 to the Manchester-Essex Regional High School Hornets on Thursday night at North Reading High School. North Reading fell behind early, as they were unable to cope with a first-half barrage that saw Manchester-Essex with a double-digit lead at the half thanks to 19 points in the first and second quarter from senior guard Joe Mussachia. However, unlike their blowout loss on Tuesday at the hands of Hamilton-Wenham, North Reading was able to bring the game back within a basket in the last five minutes, but Manchester-Essex was able to hold on with a series of free throws in the final minutes. One of the best rivalries in the Cape Ann League lived up to its billing on Friday night as the visiting North Reading Hornets defeated the Lynnfield Pioneers 52-44. Lynnfield got out to a fast start thanks to an aggressive full-court press that created opportunities for the Pioneers and kept the game tight, with North Reading barely coming back to take a one-point lead into the half. "I thought Lynnfield's athleticism really bothered us. It seemed like we were a half-step slow, especially in the beginning," said North Reading coach Joe Casey. Early tests for abound for inexperienced but hard-working boys' basketball team.
If you are looking for a scrappy, hardnosed basketball team to watch north of Boston this year, you might want to take a look at the boys' squad from North Reading High School. Granted, due to significant turnover in personnel, the Hornets may not have any choice than to go back to basics, but North Reading coach Joe Casey is up for the challenge, and so are his players. "I think the kids have a realistic expectation of what we need to do," said Casey. "It's not going to be a finesse type of team.
