Hornets Pressed Into Defeat Against Bishop Fenwick

North Reading girls basketball falls to the Crusaders, 66-47, after a 19-3 Bishop Fenwick run in the third quarter proves too much to overcome.

It was a tale of two seasons for the North Reading Hornets girls’ basketball team, so it was fitting that their season ending 66-47 Division 3 North Sectional preliminary-round loss to the Bishop Fenwick Crusaders at Salem State University on Tuesday night was a game with two personalities. For most of the first half, it appeared that the game was in either team’s hands, as Bishop Fenwick could only build a four-point lead after two quarters, due in large part to Crusader senior guard Amy Pelletier’s 18 first-half points. But while Pelletier continued her offensive assault in the second half, the Crusaders intensified their backcourt pressure they had begun late in the second quarter, creating a series of problems for the Hornets in terms …

March Madness Comes to North Reading

Kirsten Morrison and Lauren Hebert will be vital to head coach Karla Sullivan's "40-point rule" for victory.

North Reading is about to celebrate March Madness once again as the Hornets take the floor Tuesday for some girls’ basketball action against the Crusaders of Bishop Fenwick in an MIAA Division 3 North Sectional first-round contest at Salem State University at 7 p.m. Ninth-ranked North Reading enters the tournament at 10-10, while No. 8 Bishop Fenwick stands at 12-10. The Hornets will seek to regain the high they had in the first half of the season, where they were 8-2. They closed the season with a 2-8 record, including a six-game losing streak at the beginning of February. North Reading will rely on strong performances from team stars Lauren Hebert and Kirsten Morrison, but the real key may be what head coach Karla Sullivan calls “the 40-…

Hornets Hoop Squads Look to Head in Same Direction at Midway Point

Both the boys and girls' basketball teams will face Cape Ann Large Division teams for the first time in the 2010-2011 season starting this week.

Tournament time is quickly approaching for Massachusetts high school basketball teams, and this includes the North Reading Hornets. However, from recent results and upcoming match-ups, it appears that the boys in green and gold will have a much different path than the girls when it comes to what will happen in March. Boys The 2010-2011 North Reading boys’ basketball season has been a mixed bag so far, and one could say that the last week was a microcosm of that inconsistency, with a strong win against Amesbury at home and a difficult loss to Georgetown on the road. There’s no denying that this North Reading squad has talent, but time is running out on whether the Hornets can consistently bring that talent to bear and earn a playoff spot …

Hornet Girls Beat Georgetown by 30 at Home

Royals' star limited to five points while Hornets' tandem stars Lauren Hebert and Kirsten Morrison grab a combined 26 in the victory.

If the North Reading High School girls’ basketball program continues to grow these massive margins of victory as of late, the school might have to offer free pocket calculators for all its fans. The Hornets clobbered the visiting Georgetown Royals at home on Tuesday night, 59-29, in a contest that wasn’t particularly close at any time in the evening. Although they couldn’t repeat their 45-point margin of victory a week earlier against visiting Rockport, the win was far wider than earlier victories such as a six-point win against Manchester-Essex and a one-point triumph against Hamilton-Wenham during the last week of December. Onlookers could say that the recent spate of colossal victories might be a new trend with a North Reading team in a…

Hebert, Morrison Pace Hornet Girls to 62-17 Win

Girls basketball team dominates every aspect over visiting Rockport Vikings on Tuesday night.

The North Reading girls basketball team probably couldn't have started 2011 off any better than they did at home on Tuesday night. If there was any doubt over the Hornets' status as one of the best squads in the Cape Ann League, that doubt was put on life support with their 62-17 victory over the Rockport Vikings. Until North Reading (4-1) gave its reserves increased playing time in the second half, there was a significant possibility that the Vikings might not break double digits on the evening, as the Hornets outscored their opponents 21-2 in the first quarter and headed into halftime with a 36-4 advantage. The Hornets were so dominant throughout the evening that their two principal scorers, junior guard Lauren Hebert and senior center…

Illness Causes Hornet Girls to Split Marian Mustang Classic

Depleted roster damaged chances in first game, but height advantage sealed victory in second.

It wasn't a championship win by any means, but getting a third-place finish and a solid offensive performance in the Marian Mustang Classic with a shorthanded roster last week was certainly a positive result for the North Reading girls' basketball team. Although they were able stay within five points heading into the fourth quarter of their first-round matchup against Whitinsville Christian, the loss of four players, including starting point guard Lauren Hebert, before the game due to illness led to an inability in coping with the Crusaders' 1-3-1 defense during critical periods throughout the game, proving vital in a 45-32 defeat. However, the girls bounced back with one of their best offensive performances of the year in a 60-42 victory …

Makowski's Quick Hands Help Hornet Girls Escape With Win

Sophomore guard steals the ball with two seconds left to seal 44-43 victory over visiting Hamilton-Wenham.

A quick move by sophomore guard Elise Makowski just before the buzzer helped the North Reading girls basketball team narrowly escape with 44-43 victory over Hamilton-Wenham at North Reading High School on Tuesday night. Both teams continuously traded free throws throughout the final five minutes of the game, as the Generals (0-3) ate into a nine-point lead that the Hornets held at the end of the third quarter. With two seconds remaining in the game and North Reading leading by one, Makowski made a quick move to steal the ball and seal the win for the Hornets (2-1). Senior center and co-captain Kirsten Morrison led all Hornets with 20 points while Generals sophomore forward Cassandra Fibbe topped Hamilton-Wenham with 18. Despite their …

Hornets Eek Out Victory In Defensive Brawl

Junior Lauren Hebert leads all scorers with 11 points In 39-27 victory over Lynnfield.

How one views Friday's girls' basketball matchup between Lynnfield and North Reading depends largely on whether one wants to look at it as a glass half full or a glass half empty. For optimists, North Reading's 39-27 victory at Lynnfield was a defensive masterpiece while pessimists will just look at the multitude of missed shots on both sides. Lynnfield coach Pamela MacDonald was one of the optimists. "If you have told me that was the score, I really would have thought we would have won," said MacDonald. "Offensively we just struggled, we had a bunch of young kids. " Likewise, North Reading coach Karla Sullivan was also one of the optimists in attendance, and not just toward the defensive prowess on both sides, but also towards her club's …

Morrison, Hebert Will Lead New-Look Hornets Girls Basketball Squad

North Reading returns only five players with varsity experience, but two are 2009-10 Cape Ann League All-Stars.

Much like their male counterparts, the North Reading girls' basketball team is looking to take a blue-collar approach to a successful 2010-2011 season. Last season the Hornets accumulated a 14-6 record before the year came to an end with an 11-point loss to Stoneham in the Division 3 North quarterfinals. This season, they are returning with a fresh look due to the return of only five varsity players, only two of which, 6-foot-1-inch center Kirsten Morrison and point guard Laura Hebert, were starters. While both Morrison and Hebert were Cape Ann League All-Stars last year and will likely provide most of the team's offensive punch this year, North Reading head coach Karla Sullivan hasn't determined who else might step up for the Hornets this…
