Vesey Jolts Austin Prep Into Super 8 Final

Thanks to a pair of goals from North Reading resident Nolan Vesey, the Cougars snuck past top seed St. John's Prep, 2-1, and will play at TD Garden on Sunday.

Austin Prep's 'super' season will end on the biggest stage. Thanks to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded St. John's Prep on Wednesday night inside Lowell's Tsongas Center, the Austin Prep boys hockey team will play on Sunday in the Super 8 championship game on the ice of TD Garden. The Cougars previously knocked Reading High School out of the Super 8 in the opening round with a closely contested 2-0 sweet of the series. On Wednesday, North Reading resident Nolan Vesey was credited with both Cougar goals, including one on a strange bounce with 2:11 to play in the third period to put Austin Prep ahead for good. Lady Rockets Two Wins From Second Straight Title

Reading High School toppled North Andover to win the North Division 2 sectional title on Saturday morning in Lowell.

It was business as usual for the Reading High School girls basketball team. The Lady Rockets topped North Andover on Saturday at the Tsongas Center in Lowell to earn a spot in the state semifinal, hoping to take the next step in earning a second straight undefeated state championship. Thanks to Saturday's win, head coach Kim Penney's charges will take on Medfield at 6 p.m. on the parquet of TD Garden. Can't make the game? No worries. Reading Girls Basketball Wins North Division 2 Crown

With their 50-33 victory on Saturday, the Rockets advanced to play on Monday at TD Garden.

Reading High School's quest for back-to-back undefeated girls basketball seasons lives on. Though North Andover sliced the Rockets' lead into single digits in the third quarter, Reading was in command throughout and cruised to a 50-33 victory in the North Division 2 final at Lowell's Tsongas Center. With Olivia Healy shut down for much of the game, Reading was able to rely on 19 points from Sarah Haase. Following the victory, the Rockets move on to play on Monday on the parquet of TD Garden. "It's great to get a win, but we can't get ahead of ourselves," said Haase, a junior. "We're going into the Garden and it's going to be another big game." Girls Basketball Dodges Scare From Upstart Wilmington

Reading pulled away late after nearly blowing a 16-point second half lead. With the win, the Rockets will play for the North Division 2 title on Saturday morning.

Wilmington High School head coach, and just about every other coach who's come across Olivia Healy for that matter, is thrilled to see the Reading High School senior leave the state after this season. That means Healy is doing something right. On Thursday night, she did just about everything right. Healy poured home 36 points to help the Rockets stave off a frantic Wildcat comeback. Reading pulled away late and earned a 63-51 victory in the North Division 2 semifinal. "I think the whole league is, the whole state is," said Keane with a laugh. "Once the ball gets in her hands, it's tough to tell where it's going. That's why she's a Division 1 player on the best team in the state." Reading Girls Basketball Shakes Off Rust, Beats Burlington

The Rockets led by just four points at halftime but pulled away for a 62-40 victory over the Red Devils.

It took a two quarters of play. But the Reading High School girls basketball team finally found their postseason form. The undefeated No. 1 seed Rockets led upstart No. 8 seed Burlington by just four points at halftime of Sunday's North Division 2 quarterfinal game. Having not played in more than a week, the Rockets shook off the rust and found their form in the second half, cruising to a 62-40 victory. "It took us longer than I would have liked to get back in the swing of things," said head coach Kim Penney. "The third period was more like what we are capable of." Pair of Reading Teams Continue Playoff Runs This Week

The Reading girls basketball team and boys hockey team are the final two squads alive in the postseason.

Two Reading High School teams remain in action this week, prepared to play their biggest games of the season to date. Boys Hockey in Super 8 Hole The Rockets opened Super 8 tournament play on Sunday at Lowell's Tsongas Center, and despite a strong performance the locals are now facing a series deficit. Reading lost to Austin Prep, 2-1, after trailing throughout nearly the entire contest. The Cougars pounced to a 1-0 lead in the first period and made it 2-0 late before the Rockets put home a tally with 22 seconds left. In order to keep its season alive, Reading must win on Wednesday. Puck drops at 7:45 p.m. inside Stoneham Arena in game two. If the Rockets win, the decisive game will take place on either Saturday or Sunday. The Reading …

Reading Boys Basketball Upset Bid Falls Just Short

The Rockets were eliminated from the postseason on Tuesday night with a 60-57 road loss to New Mission.

The Reading High School boys basketball team's stay in the North Division 2 postseason was a short one. But for the Rockets, it was mission accomplished in proving they belonged in the bracket. New Mission, the No. 8 seed in the tournament, snuck past No. 9 Reading by a 60-57 margin in the teams' preliminary round. Congratulations to the Rockets. Although the score does not indicate a victory, our Rockets were victorious. They took a team that is favored to win the D-2 title to the final shot of the game. Playoff Brackets Revealed for Rocket Teams

Four Reading High School teams learned their postseason assignments when the MIAA unveiled its playoff pairings over the weekend.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association revealed its postseason brackets over the weekend, and Reading High School has four teams ready to begin play in the upcoming days. Rockets Hockey Ready to Blast Into Super 8 Action The Reading boys hockey team earned the No. 5 seed in the elite Super 8 tournament. As a result they'll take on Austin Prep in a best-of-three series that will reportedly begin on Sunday at Lowell's Tsongas Center.
