Lilo Bunny is waiting for you at PAWS.
Sniff, sniff, sniff…..hello nice person. My name is Lilo and I am a one-year-old mini lop eared bunny who really likes people. And people seem to like me, too. I guess it is because I am quite cute with my hanging ears, beautiful harlequin markings, and sweet, twitchy, bunny nose. Rabbits just don’t get much cuter than I am, if I do say so myself. You might think I am a bit biased. But really, I am just a very happy and social boy who enjoys life and dreams of a wonderful home. So, you are asking yourself: Why do I need a bunny in my life? Well, I am just a bundle of pure joy. My favorite thing to do is to stick my nose out of my cage and ask to be patted. Whenever anyone is around, this is what I do. I also like to play. There …

Peppermint is waiting for you at PAWS.
Hello, I am Peppermint, a sweet confection of a girl who is in the market for someone who can appreciate a cat in the prime of her life with tons of love to offer. When it comes to choosing my friends, I definitely pick people over cats. What can I say but that I just love humans? As for my personality, I run the gamut from the energetic feline to a mellow lap girl who wants to curl up and snuggle the evening away with you. I am the perfect combination, don’t you think? I am black and white, sugar and sass, sweet and snappy. Life with me will never be boring. I am always up for a game. I like it when you hide my favorite toys and I can hunt for them throughout in the house. I also like to be helpful, as you can see in my …

Jeneva and Marta are waiting for you at PAWS.
My name is Jeneva, meaning "white wave," which seems appropriate considering my beautiful white coat, green eyes, and exotic features. From the looks of things, I must have some Siamese in my family tree. And, my tendency to talk while I'm walking around my foster home could be another hint, although my voice is as sweet and soft as I am. Yes, I am a very friendly cat who will nuzzle against you and can’t get enough petting. I am also very maternal. Anyone I love will be the object of my watchful care. I came to my foster home as a single kitten, rescued while I was trying to cross a busy street. I know that was silly and I won’t ever do it again. I don’t even ever plan on going outside again. But you know, what, I am also a bit of…

Connor is waiting for you at PAWS.
- LOCAL CONNECTIONS
Friday, April 6, 2012
The following was submitted by PAWS: I may look a bit self-satisfied in my photos, but that is just my catitude. If you ask my foster, she will tell you I am a love-muffin. Ask me, and I will tell you I am an independent, smart, healthy, young Maine coon mix who loves warm laps, tasty food, and catnip toys. Topmost on my list of favorite things is snuggling. When my foster mom walks into the room, I go over and rub her ankles. I used to wait for her to pick me up because I was a little shy, but now, I just jump right on her lap where I could nap for hours. Believe it or not, given the choice, I would rather cuddle than eat. Settling down on my favorite recliner, where I can purr and nuzzle my foster mom to my heart’s content—now that’s …

The following was submitted by PAWS: Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society, Inc. (PAWS) has been selected as the first prize winner of ASPCA's (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) nationwide Share the Love shelter incentive contest. PAWS will be awarded a $20,000 grant that will be used to assist the charity in its ongoing effort to promote and protect the rights and well-being of all domestic animals and wildlife. “We are thrilled and honored to be named the winner of this year’s Share the Love shelter incentive contest,” said PAWS president and Reading resident Sue DiMeo. “The $20,000 award is much needed and will be put to good use as we continue to care for the many local animals in need.” For every new …

Carberry is a young, beautiful, super-affectionate tabby cat.
My name is Carberry and I am a laid-back, young adult with simple needs. I am 14 pounds and all brawn, so hopefully I can fit on your lap. If not, I would be happy to just hang out with you—the closer the better. And, if you will brush me, I will follow you anywhere. I absolutely adore being brushed. In fact, if you are not brushing me, I will come and nuzzle you as a reminder. I am just a guy who likes his simple pleasures and that is one of them for me. I am cool with other cats and dogs, but I would prefer that other feline friends are as gentle and welcoming as I am. However, I would also be just fine as your one and only as long as you have time to spend with me. Maybe we could have a dinner date? You should know that I’ll always be …

Treat yourself to a special Valentine: Shadow the shepherd.
Chocolates are nice on Valentine’s Day, but we think Shadow the German shepherd mix says I love you even better. She is ten years young, with a special personality that caught everyone’s attention right from the start. When Shadow arrived, she had some serious dental needs (and was most likely in pain). But her friendly nature and her desire to be friends with everyone she met made it clear to all involved that this girl deserved a chance at a life with a new family. With the generous financial help from Poundhounds.org, Shadow received expert and loving care at VCA Wakefield Animal Hospital. She is now ready to find a home in which to enjoy her golden years. We emphasize “enjoy” here, because Shadow has a real zest for life. She adores …

Red Headed Orsini Thinks it is His Turn to Find a Home of His Own.
February is Cat Appreciation Month, and I have to tell you, I am not feeling appreciated. Sure, life is good at my fosters’ house. They are very nice people with friendly pets who I get along with just fine. I am happy for the love and warmth they have shown toward me, even when I have been shy and hesitant around them. Now that I have been here for a while, I am much more relaxed. I sleep on their beds and am happy to watch television with them. I even like being patted around my head and neck. We have become BFFs. However, just because I am happy in my foster home does not mean I want to stay here forever. After all, don’t you think I deserve a forever home of my own? I don’t know why I haven’t found my match yet. I am a …

Even a tiger has to nap sometimes.
My name is Landry and having fun is my game. That means I am looking for a home with lots of action, activity, and some other animals. I love toys so I hope you have a good supply of balls, catnip mice, and strings. If you will play laser pointer with me, I will run after that red dot until I fall into an exhausted heap. My foster parents do for me this every night, but you can take a day off occasionally, if you really need to. I should tell you that I adore dogs of all shapes and sizes. I am happy to wrestle and play with them. When we are done, I can snuggle right up as I do with my foster sister, a Lab mix.You can watch me play with her in my video. I also like my foster brother, an orange tabby cat who is very nice, although …

Sue DiMeo, President of PAWS for the past 10 years, is a friend to all those who go on four legs.
There are some jobs where taking your work home with you isn’t such a bad thing. Reading native Sue DiMeo has one of those jobs. Sure, the President of Protection of Animals in Wakefield Society (PAWS) doesn’t draw a salary or collect any employment benefits, but in terms of time expenditure, her position is full-time and then some. The organization, founded in 1982 by Esther Nowell, sees at least 500 animals come through the door per year, according to DiMeo, and facilitates as many as 300 adoptions. So how many animals reside at the DiMeo household? “Too many,” she says, with a smile. “I’m one of the major foster homes.” The 20-year resident of Reading, who currently lives on Prescott Street with her husband, got her start with PAWS …
