RBRL Pirates Crowned 2012 Champions

Pirates (17-2) put fitting end to their dominant season.

The 2012 RBRL Spring season is now in the books after the completion of the League playoffs and World Series which concluded this past Friday. Despite the rain on the final weekend of the season, the league races were still able to be decided, with the AL number one seed going to the Royals and in the NL top seed went to the Pirates. The American League playoffs produced a few upsets. The sixth seeded Athletics saved their best for the playoffs as they defeated the White Sox in the quarterfinals behind Brandon Mullarkey’s triple and steal of home.  For the second year in a row the Tigers (former Blue Jays) came on strong come playoff time as the fifth seeded squad beat both the Mariners and the favored Angels to reach the league final.  …

All Star Day, NL Playoff Races Highlight Week Five in RBRL

Rockies play well in two big matchups.

The week leading up to the All Star game featured a light schedule but there were two key matchups in the National League both involving the Rockies. In the matchup with the second place Phillies, the game was a classic with two of the league’s best pitchers, Patrick McDonald of the Phils and Carl Gillies of the Rockies going the distance. Mark Daltons two run double in the fourth gave the Phils a 3-0 lead after Jake Conte’s safety squeeze had given the Phils an earlier lead. The Rockies scored two in the bottom of the fifth when Nick O’Neil singled home Nico Gennari with the second run of the inning to make it 3-2. Both pitchers shut the door after that giving the Phils a one run victory. The Rockies did not get down from the narrow …

Astros Putting On a Hard Charge in Week Four RBRL Action

All Star Day Event this Saturday at Morton Field.

The story of the week was the Astros three wins in three days versus three of the leagues top teams.  On Friday night the Astros defeated the AL leading Angels 9-6, in the continuation of a suspended game. In that game Jake Malinski was a horse, pitching four innings and striking out seven.  The Angels were making it interesting with Brian Craven and Adam Joos getting on base four times each, but it was Joe Pappalardo’s double in the sixth inning that started the four run winning rally for the Astros.  On Saturday, it was co-player of the week Walter Greeley’s day, where he pounded two triples and a home run to cool off a very hot Padre team. The Padre’s Ryan DiSilva had two of the their six hits on the afternoon.  The Astros finished off …

Reading Babe Ruth Baseball Hits Midseason Mark

Pirates and Angels take small leads in League pennant races.

Another strong week for the National League with all teams on the upswing during the weeks action including the Pirates winning their eighth straight game and the Phillies remaining percentage points behind. In the AL, the Angels and the White Sox have swapped the lead while the Royals still linger as a threat to go on a winning streak. The game of the week featured the two teams that makeup the last four RBRL champions, Royals (’09,’10) and Phillies (’08,’11). In the game there were five lead changes and the game came down to the final pitch. The Phils jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first inning behind hits from Patrick McDonald and Sean Dynan. Luis Sosa got two back for the Royals on a two RBI single in the third and Austin Tierno …

Reading Babe Ruth Week Two in Full Swing

National League flexing their muscles in Inter-League play.

In the start of inter-league play the NL has enjoyed an early advantage behind an undefeated week from the Padres, Pirates and two win weeks from the Astros, Phillies and Rockies. In the AL, the White Sox undefeated streak came to an end with their first loss against the Phillies on Sunday, and the Angels put together a nice 2-1 week. The young Astros have only one 15-year-old on their roster and have relied on the effective pitching of a pair of 14-year-olds Jake Malinksi and Charlie Robinson on the mound so far. The performance of the week though came from a 13-year-old, as Michael Sannella pitched five strong innings and hit two doubles in their win versus the Tigers. The veteran Rockies were expected to be strong this year and started …

Reading Babe Ruth Spring Season Off and Running

White Sox, Royals, Phillies and Pirates are off to hot starts.

The Reading Babe Ruth Spring season got off to a busy start last week thanks to the surprisingly dry April weather. With teams already at the quarter pole of the schedule the parity of the league has shown through once again in 2012. All teams but one have at least one win and only one team is undefeated. In the American League, the White Sox jumped out to a 4-0 record including 2 extra inning victories. Liam Keegan and Nathan Walker have been the front end of a deep pitching staff. The Royals once again look to be a classy outfit, with early power shown by Matt Starble, Ryan Menzie and Sean Duffy and sit at 3-1.  The A’s are still looking to break through but Matt Weber’s play has opened some eyes and versatile Brandon Mullarkey hit a …
