Austin Prep Wins 'Battle of Reading' to Advance in Super 8

The Cougars toppled Reading High School in the quarterfinal series of Super 8 play, finishing off the sweep with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday night.

It was a play that summed up Reading High School's Super 8 series against in town foe Austin Prep. Close, but not quite enough. With four seconds remaining in the third period, trailing 1-0, the Rockets finally beat Cougar sophomore goalie Elijah Harris for a split second. The puck fluttered over his head and came to a stop - right over the cross bar and on top of the net.  Austin Prep dodged the bullet, and eventually the Rockets on Wednesday night, winning 1-0 to sweep its quarterfinal Super 8 boys hockey series and advance to face either St. John's Prep or Central Catholic. "We left it on the ice. It was terrific," said Reading head coach Mark Doherty. "I just think we weren't thrilled with our first game, quite honestly. But that's the…

Rockets Tame Wildcats in 'Super' Match Up

The Reading boys hockey team, ranked No. 4 in the state, toppled Wilmington, which was hoping to help its chances of becoming the first Division 2 team since 1996 to earn a Super 8 invite.

The boys hockey playoffs won't start for a little over a week. But Reading found itself in a postseason caliber game in Wilmington, passing a major test against the Wildcats. Division 2 Wilmington entered the game hoping to knock off Reading, which is ranked No. 4 in the state. By doing so, the Wildcats would have given themselves a chance to become the first team since Tewksbury in 1996 to earn a Super 8 invite. But after Wilmington earned an early 1-0 edge, the Rockets struck back to tie the game in the second period and got the game-winner from Rob Devaney with just over three minutes to go in the game.  Matt McLelland took the puck off a face off in the final minute and rifled it three-quarters of the way down the ice for the goal that…

Rockets Battle Back for Draw With Woburn [VIDEO]

Despite falling behind 3-0 within the blink of an eye, the Reading boys hockey team escaped with a 3-3 draw on Wednesday night.

What a difference a month makes. After dominating Woburn, 7-1, on January 12, it was the Tanners who pounced to a 3-0 lead on Wednesday night at Burbank Arena. But the Rockets bounced back nicely, chipping away and eventually coming away with a 3-3 tie. Reading, ranked No. 4 in the state by ESPN Boston, is still in the middle of the conversation for a Super 8 berth thanks to its 12-1-5 record. But on Wednesday it was Woburn that looked like the top tier team. Matt McLelland began to turn the tides, however, as he scored with 3:37 left in the opening frame. Mike Thomson sliced the deficit to 3-2 early in the second period, and it appeared the Rockets had knotted the score with 4:10 left in the frame. But Robert Diloreto's goal was waved off…
