Reading Resident Arrested on OUI Charge After Accident

The accident occurred at the intersection of Franklin and Dividence.

Reading resident Brian Hartford, 22, of 31 Lilah Lane was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of liquor and a marked lanes violation after hitting a pole at the intersection of Franklin Street and Dividence Road, according to police. The accident happened just after 10 p.m. Wednesday night. Hartford was driving a grey Audi when he hit a telephone pole at the intersection of Franklin and Dividence, police said. Police responded to the scene and found Hartford's vehicle on the sidewalk facing the wrong direction. Hartford suffered minor injuries and was arrested for allegedly operating under the influence of liquor and a marked lanes violation. READING PATCH: Facebook | Twitter | E-mail Updates |

Arrests At 6:38 p.m. Friday, a caller reported a car accident on Salem Street. As a result of the accident, Kevin Carter, 51, of 42A Pleasant St., Wakefield was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, third offense; following too close; and possession of under one ounce of a class D substance. Arlington Man Arrested for Operating Under the Influence of Drugs, Reading

The following is an excerpt from the Reading Police Department log from Thursday through Tuesday. The information is open to the public. Arrests At 6:39 p.m. Friday, a caller reported a minor car accident on Walkers Brook Drive. A male fled from the accident on foot with a dog. The dog was found in the parking lot of the Longhorn Steakhouse. The male, Christopher K. Gray, 39, of Peter Tufts Road in Arlington was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of drugs and a marked lanes violation. The dog was later picked up by Gray's sister. At 2:57 a.m. Saturday, a Grove Street resident reported that a car struck his fence and the driver sped off. Police found that a dangerous curve sign in the area was knocked down. Police pulled …

How Many Reading and North Reading Residents Have Gun Permits?

President Barack Obama's proposals for new gun control measures have everyone talking. But do you know how many of your neighbors might be armed?

In the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, President Barack Obama has made several new proposals for increased gun control. That got us thinking. How many Reading and North Reading residents have a gun license? The answer: 706 in Reading and 960 in North Reading, if you're talking about the most common type of gun license. In bureaucratic-speak, that's the "Resident Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms." According to the Globe, it's the only Massachusetts license that lets individuals carry a concealed weapon and own any type of legal gun. To put that 706 person figure in context, Reading's population is 24,747 according to the 2010 Census, and North Reading has 960 gun permits with a population of 14,892 according …

Suspect Described in Reading Robbery

The suspect is wanted for other recent robberies in Melrose, Stoneham, Woburn and Winchester.

The Gulf Gas Station on Main Street was robbed of several hundred dollars Thursday evening at approximately 10:45 p.m., according to Reading Police. The suspect was described as a white male, approximately six feet tall and 180 pounds. He was wearing black pants, a black sweatshirt with a hood and a mask.  The suspect made it a point to show his black handgun to the clerk before he took several hundred dollars.  Police believe the suspect "matches the description of the suspect from recent armed robberies in Melrose, Stoneham, Woburn and Winchester." Armed Robbery in Reading Thursday Night

The Gulf Station on Main Street was robbed at gunpoint.

According to WCVB.com, the Gulf Station on Main Street was robbed late Thursday night. No injuries were reported. The suspect was armed and believed to be the same person who recently robbed stores in Melrose, Stoneham and Woburn, WCVB.com said. State police assisted Reading Police to track the suspect, but no arrests have been made. Check in with us for updates.

Two Prostitution Arrests Made in Reading

A Reading and New York resident were arrested this week.

Reading Police made two prostitution arrests on Nov. 9 at 12:48 p.m. Yong Du, 43, 4180 Summit Court, Flushing, New York and Youjia Zhang, 24, 360 Main Street, Reading were both arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit prostitution. Zhang was also charged with sexual conduct for a fee.  According to police, they worked with North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) detectives to conduct the investigation of alleged prostitution at Reading Body Wellness Center on Main Street Reading. An undercover officer went into the center and pretended to be a customer during the investigation.  Both Du and Zhang were arrested at the Main Street business and will be arraigned at Woburn District Court on Nov. 13. 3 Reading Liquor Sellers Penalized for Sale to Minor

The Wine Shop, Wine Bunker and Sam’s Bistro will have their liquor licenses suspended for a short period of time.

Three Reading businesses that sell liquor received penalties Tuesday for selling to a minor under age 21. The Board of Selectmen imposed no-liquor sales times at The Wine Shop of Reading (Reading Fine Wines, LLC) at 676 Main St., the Wine Bunker (CW1 Ltd.) at 1 General Way and Sam’s Bistro (Bistro Concepts, Inc.) at 107 Main St. The Wine Shop’s liquor license will be suspended for five days:  this coming Monday, through Wednesday, Oct. 22, 23 and 24 and this coming Jan. 7 and 8. The Wine Shop received a three-day suspension in 2011, the selectmen noted, about a year ago. The Wine Bunker cannot sell alcohol for three days: this coming Sunday, Oct 21 through Tuesday, Oct. 23. RPD Chief Weighs in On Zero Tolerance Underage Drinking Policy

Patch sat down with the Reading police chief to find out more about the new zero tolerance policy when it comes to underage drinking.

Patch sat down with Reading Police Chief James Cormier last week so he could answer some questions about the new zero tolerance policy that the department implemented due to ongoing issues with underage drinking. On Sept. 2, according to Reading Police, officers reported to a house party were over 40 youths were present without adult supervision. As a result of the party, 38 minors were charged with possession of alcohol and one youth was charged with furnishing alcohol to minors, police said.  After that incident, Reading Police decided to implement a zero tolerance policy regarding cases that involve underage drinking.
