READING — Wait, stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a late-season game between Reading Memorial High School and Stoneham High's girls basketball teams with the league title on the line. It was nearly a case of history repeating itself last night, as the Lady Rockets and Lady Spartans squared off in a Middlesex League matchup with the regular-season crown hanging in the balance. Last year, Stoneham dropped the Lady Rockets, 51-34, in Stoneham on Feb. 12, forcing a three-way split of the crown between themselves, Reading and Melrose. 4-1 vote permits a one-year pilot program to sell 35 banners that will be placed along the base of the grandstand.
After months of gathering input from town officials, legal counsel, and school and community resources, the School Committee voted 4-1 Monday night in favor of permitting sponsorship signs to be installed at Arthur J. Kenney Field. The measure passed as a one-year pilot program that allows businesses to buy sponsorship space at the field. As explained by Parks Director Marty Tilton, 35 signs will be installed along the space at the base of the bleachers. Each will be 3 feet by 5 feet and will bring in $1,000 per sign. If the pilot program goes well, space exists to add another 15 signs, Tilton added. Finding ways to offset taxpayer funded expenses should be a priority for all town groups. Creative thinking can be a good idea. We should find other budgets to apply this good idea to, right?
