Toys for Tots Needs Help; Where You Can Donate in Reading

Toys for Tots is still 15,000 toys shy of meeting their holiday expectations.

The Boston-area Toys for Tots Organization is still 15,000 toys short of their 2011 holiday goal, according to an article posted on Boston.com on Wednesday morning. Although people have been donating generously this holiday season, the charity's spokesman, Marine Corporal Vin Dolan, told Boston.com that the number of requests from Boston-area organizations is also up. Dolan said that 350 organizations requested toys this year, as opposed to 290 in 2010. Last year, Toys for Tots in Boston collected 138,845 toys. This year, Dolan told Boston.com he expects the group to give out about 140,000. Toys for Tots is only collecting donations through Thursday! You can drop off your Toys for Tots donations at the Reading Fire Station, 757 Main Street.

Toys for Tots returns again this year, bringing gifts to less fortunate families in Tewksbury and Wilmington. There are a host of drop off locations in town, including Town Hall, Market Basket, Reading Co-Operative Bank and the Senior Center. Wilmington resident Frank West, who organizes the local efforts, said at a recent Board of Selectmen meeting that the biggest struggle is solicitng donations for children 9-14 years old, while three- to five-year-olds are the most popular donation age. “If we can have people in our own community have a good Christmas and a …

Call for Donations to Toys for Tots

Reading Firefighters have already started their call for donations to the Toys for Tots program this year.

The following was submitted by the Reading Fire Department: Reading Firefighters have already started their call for donations to the Toys for Tots program this year—largely because the program is expecting a tremendous number of requests this holiday season. Reading firefighters run the Toys for Tots collection in North Reading and five other surrounding towns. “The Marines that we work for started getting requests for toys in August,” said Reading Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician Bob Beck. The charity has never received requests that early, he said, and the Middlesex County chapter received more requests last year than any year before. Firefighters Make Early Toys for Tots Call

Organization expects significant volume of requests this year.
