The North Reading natives and Malden Catholic students will represent Massachusetts in New Haven, CT, this weekend.
Malden Catholic’s Devin Visconti lost in the final of last year’s MIAA All-State wrestling championships. He wasn’t about to let it happen again. After two days of grueling competition, Devin and his twin brother Kyle Visconti, both of North Reading, progressed to the finals in their respective weight classes at Salem High School's Veterans Memorial Field House on Saturday. Just minutes after watching Kyle lose a heartbreaking 4-3 final against Matt Buco of Greater Lawrence at 125 pounds, the look of determination in Devin’s eyes as he took to the mat said quite clearly: not this year. Lynnfield-North Reading finishes the dual meet season with a 14-6 team record, and now will head into the individual sectionals.
They’ve been near the top all year, so it was no surprise that the Lynnfield-North Reading co-operative wrestling team was in the thick of it at the Division III North Dual Meet Sectional Tournament on Saturday in Wakefield, leaving with a second-place finish out of the 10-team field. The day started with a 53-25 victory over Cape Ann League foe Wilmington, nearly duplicating the score posted against the Wildcats earlier this season, earning a berth in the semifinals. There they met long-time Merrimack Valley sectional rival Tyngsborough, which appeared to be in control heading into the home stretch.
