Thank you for the heads up Will. Sounds like they are pushing every boundary of feasibility. We don't want a "surprise" light on an already dangerous portion of Main St. We are not going to burden Town Recreation property with traffic access for the financial gain of private developers and I propose that all sewage be pumped in the proper direction - downhill and right over these plans.

ReplyClarification to the above article. The Finance Committee did not vote to recommend the zoning change. Their jurisdiction covers only the financial aspects of warrant articles. Town Meeting as a whole must decide if a Zoning change is warranted.

ReplyAs a professnal Realtor/Broker and resident for ten years, I have consistently seen well preserved and maintained period homes sell for top prices in Reading. The biggest challenge for many Realtors and some home owners is a lack of accurate knowledge about preservation restrictions. This lack of understanding breeds and speads fear among residents and homeowners and can be compared to the same violent opposition that some people have to septic systems vs. town sewage. "If I don't understand it - then it must be bad." It needs to be clear to our citizens that the current witch hunt to eliminate all protection for historic structures is being led by a TINY group of Self-serving voices and is out of step with most communities. Anyone who has any valid experience with demolition and the new construction permitting process knows that the planning time frame is easily 6 months. It is a continuing disappointment to me how much time and effort the majority of the Board of Selectmen is willing to spend on this topic in the face of other more pressing townwide challenges. Rising larceny and drug abuse must take a back seat while we debate and re-debate the demolition delay by-law month after month for the benefit of 2 or 3 owners who WANT to tear down their commercially zoned structures. Kudos to the members of the Reading Historical Commision for consistently rising to the challenge of protecting the character and small town feel of our neighborhoods and downtown.

Reply@Karl. Our community could really benefit from positive contributions to this forum based on accurate facts and knowledge. But you can take comfort in the fact that you may bulldoze your home anytime you want to or add a patio to your backyard without going before the ZBA with expensive plans and installing a recharge system.

ReplyWhen Reading joined MWRA we were burdened with a number of extra provisions including the Aquifer Protection District, the permanent water usage restrictions, and the maintenance of wells that we didn't use even when our water supply was in danger during the MWRA pipe break..
It was one thing to permanently get on board with the MWRA and support their capital intensive mission regardless of cost in the future (and our lack of local influence.) It is another thing entirely to be beholden to the State or MWRA permanently with respect to the Ipswich River water shed.
Once the redundant water source is in place then Town management should request relief from ALL of these external restrictions so that the local community can decide the best use and management of the Town's resources.
Unfortunately other "watershed" towns are not held to the same standards as Reading. I am fully confident that under our own management, Reading will continue to make decisions that weigh both the community and environmental realities. It's time to level the playing field.
Residents in the Aquifer Protection District deserve relief from the excessively and unfairly burdensome building restrictions and expenses at the earliest date possible.

This is a great business addition to downtown! I stop by the Eastern Ave, Lynn location every time I am in the neighborhood. Two thumbs up!
