It’s Good Business: The Friends of the Reading Library Fundraiser

The Friends of the Reading Public Library are in the midst of their “Shop Reading for the Library” campaign. We are proud to be part of the growing list of local businesses supporting this worthy cause, donating a portion of proceeds during the week on behalf of customers who mention they are supporting the library.

Funds raised by the Friends of the Library go toward enrichment programming, supplementing town funding and providing development for library staff. Residents benefit from passes to 16 museums and local attractions, summer reading programs, concert series, movie nights, and book sales.

Over the years, the Shop Reading days has grown from a small group of local businesses to about two dozen. Some offer special discounts through coupons and others have canisters for direct donations on their counters.

It is efforts like the Shop Reading that best demonstrate how the most effective  fundraisers are a town-wide event. Here, at the Chocolate Truffle, we offer our Fundraising Days program, in which we have an organization pick a designated day or week. They promote the event, urging supporters to shop at The Chocolate Truffle during the designated time, either in person, online, or by phone.  When a customer mentions the organization during the transaction  (they must mention the organization by name), we set aside the receipt. All receipts are tallied at the end of the designated time period, and we contribute 15 percent of the tally.

In addition to Fundraising Days, we participate in tasting events or offer a private home or offsite event, where people get to learn about the history of chocolate and taste some of our most popular items. Fundraising Opportunities like these are a little different and special to keep your donors interested, and to set you apart from the other groups competing for limited dollars.

We believe we’ve discovered the secret of successful fundraising: offer something your donors actually want!  The Friends of the Reading Public Library have discovered that as well, and that is the key to their success.
